SEATTLE – A pair of Washington student-athletes and the UW football team have been nominated for 2023 Seattle Sports Star Awards.
Baylee Klingler is a candidate for Sports star of the year, women’s sport. A unanimous first-team All-American, Klinger was named the 2022 Pac-12 Player of the Year, leading the league in home runs, RBI and batting average. She was also among the top three finalists for the US Collegiate Softball Player of the Year honor.
Michael Penix Jr. is a candidate for Sports star of the year, men’s sport. Penix finished eighth in Heisman Trophy voting this year and was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player after leading the Huskies to a victory in the Alamo Bowl. He set the Washington single-season passing record with 4,641 yards.
Washington Football’s outstanding season is nominated for Sports story of the year, which is awarded to an individual, group of individuals, or organization that has positively captured and inspired the state of Washington. The Huskies (11-2, 7-2 Pac-12) won the Valero Alamo Bowl over No. 20 Texas, their fourth win over a ranked opponent in 2022. In his first season as head coach, Kalen DeBoerthe team finished No. 8 in the final AP poll.
