West Bromwich Albion 4-0 Chesterfield: The Baggies are through to the fourth round

West Bromwich Albion progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable victory over National League side Chesterfield in a replay.

John Swift gave the Baggies the lead when he curled into the bottom left corner midway through the first half.

The five-time winners doubled their lead through Tom Rogic three minutes after the restart and Jake Livermore soon made it 3-0 from a corner.

After Akwasi Asante hit the crossbar for the visitors, Jovan Malcolm added the fourth.

Albion will travel to Bristol City in the next round after The Robins beat Swansea City 2-1 after extra time Tuesday.

Chesterfield and West Brom drew 3-3 in the opening tie 10 days ago and the Championship club needed a stoppage-time equalizer from Brandon Thomas-Asante to force a replay – after twice leading in the first half.

The Spireites are pushing for promotion back to the English Football League but Paul Cook’s men ended up paying for defensive errors against an in-form club 70 places above them in the league pyramid.

The hosts made a quick start at The Hawthorns despite making 10 changes from their win at Luton Town on Saturday as Grady Diangana had a goal ruled out in the third minute for a foul on Chesterfield goalkeeper Lucas Covolano.

Swift, the sole survivor of the weekend, broke the deadlock when Jamie Grimes headed Livermore badly in the box and the midfielder brought the ball down smartly before firing a low left-foot shot past the keeper’s outstretched arm.

West Brom took control after the break when Rogic converted after Chesterfield failed to clear Adam Reach’s shot, then Livermore went unmarked to control and hammer home a half-volley from Swift’s short corner six minutes later.

The visitors almost pulled one back with eight minutes remaining but Asante was saved well by David Button and Tim Akinola saw his follow-up blocked before Asante then hit the crossbar from close range.

Albion scored in stoppage time when substitute Malcolm headed home Conor Townsend’s cross for his first senior goal for the club.

West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan told BBC Radio WM:

“The result was positive and the important fact is that we go further in the cup.

“Every player who is on the field, especially the forwards, must have the responsibility of helping the team at every moment of the game.

“I think John Swift was fantastic, helped the team in midfield and finished very well with his left foot.

“I am satisfied with the nature of the goals.”

Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“Four terrible goals to concede. None of them were the ones that opened us up.

“They are a very good championship team, and you could see that by the quality they had. But we look back at the four goals, those are the ones we gave them on a plate and didn’t they defend well at all.

“Everything is a matter of results and we have no doubts.

“You can’t afford to defend like that and it’s a shame because we brought so many fans and we were hoping it was written in the stars to cause an upset.”
